Building a Healthy, Safe Sense of S.E.L.F.

Four Modules of the Cross Modal Certification Program

Cross Modal exercises are adapted and to the four Domains of the evidence-supported attachment-based trauma-informed Sanctuary Model.

SELF is the organizing principle around which the cross modal creative arts strategies revolve. In the Trauma-informed Certification program, the four domains of SELF (Safety – Emotion regulation – Loss – Future) are explored in depth, using Cross Modal ‘BrainsmART’ exercises.

BrainsART refers to the strategies that promote the vertical (top – down; bottom – up) and horizontal (bi-lateral) integration of function. The ARTS (visualization, music or movement) all use the language of the unconscious, which is imagery. Storytelling (the fourth perceptual mode) uses the language of the conscious mind, which is words. Together they make links between non-verbal memory and the verbal context and meaning of our personal narrative. Cross modal sees how the ‘image’ modes of perception – visual, musical, and movement – seek meaning from the left-brain’s story telling faculties to build and install a safe sense of SELF that can earn secure relationships with others.

The cross modal arts engage the triune brain for installing ‘states‘ of Safety and promoting Emotion regulation even under high levels of stress. They enable clinicians to work with at-risk clientele moving through Loss – without re-traumatization. They allow us to ‘carry forward’ the safety associated with personal growth and therapeutic alliance. Safety and Emotion regulation are tools that equip all of us to move through inevitable Loss and envision a ‘safe’ Future. This is a trauma-informed program that can help educators and mental health clinicians help the traumatized and fragmented families, work and religious organizations and especially individuals of the world return to safety.
